Illinois Department of Natural Resourses (IDNR) - Workshops
             


The Illinois Department of Natural Resources' (IDNR) Division of Education sponsors educator workshops through the ENTICE program. These workshops offer Continuing Professional Development Units for teachers.

Please register for workshops through the link shown with each workshop description. A nonrefundable registration fee is required. The fee is $10.00 per person per workshop unless stated otherwise in the workshop description. Should you have questions about workshop registration please email (dnr.teachkids@illinois.gov) or call (217-524-4126) the IDNR Division of Education. Should the IDNR cancel a workshop, registrants will receive a credit certificate toward registration at another workshop of the same type (on site or online). Some restrictions apply.

Course Name:  Illinois Threatened and Endangered Species

 Join us for a workshop about the endangered and threatened species of Illinois. Targeted to teachers of grades 4-8, you’ll work with experts on the topic and will experience activities that can be incorporated immediately into your curriculum. Course Name:  Illinois Mussels

 Mussels are familiar to most people only as the shells that remain when these animals die. Come to this workshop for educators of grades kindergarten through eight and discover how complex mussels really are. You’ll learn about mussel life history, identification, relationships to other organisms and adaptations. Our experts will also discuss the relationship between mussels and industry in Illinois as well as how technology has affected their populations. Course Name:  Illinois Millipedes and Centipedes

 Millepedes and centipedes are fascinating creatures, but how much do you know about them? Experts from the Field Museum in Chicago will conduct this workshop at beautiful Giant City State Park. Targeted to educators of grades four through six, you’ll learn about millipede and centipede life history, identification, adaptations, relationships to other organisms and more. A section on utilizing millipedes and centipedes in the classroom will give you a head start on introducing these animals with your students. Continuing Professional Development Units are available.  Imagining the vast prairies of Illinois’ past is difficult, but you can experience one of the best examples remaining in our state if you join us for this workshop at the Midewin National Tallgrass Prairie. Course Name:  The Basics of Waterfowl Drawing and Photography
Program:  ENTICE
Location: Bass Pro Shops, Bolingbrook

 The Illinois Department of Natural Resources (IDNR), the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service and Bass Pro Shops are partnering to offer Illinois teachers an opportunity to enhance their artistic skills in relation to waterfowl. Your experiences can be applied to engaging your students in the Federal Junior Duck Stamp Design Contest for 2009. A professional bird photographer will lead the morning session on waterfowl photography. He'll offer tips on how to get the best images of waterfowl in the wild. The afternoon session will be led by a teacher whose students are consistently winners in the Illinois portion of the Federal Junior Duck Stamp Design Contest. She'll show you basic techniques for illustrating waterfowl in a variety of media. This new workshop is part of the ENTICE (Environment and Nature Training Institute for Conservation) workshop series from the IDNR and will be held at the Bass Pro Shops store in Bolingbrook, Illinois, on Friday, June 27, 2008. Teachers of grades K-12 are eligible to attend and may earn 5.0 Continuing Professional Development Units.

 Educators of grades kindergarten through six are invited to register for this workshop developed in cooperation with staff of the Peggy Notebaert Nature Museum. Butterfly life history, identification, conservation and adaptations will be discussed. Course Name:  Illinois Biodiversity Basics

 Illinois Biodiversity Basics is a supplemental, biodiversity education curriculum developed by the Illinois Department of Natural Resources, Chicago Wilderness and the World Wildlife Fund. Illinois Biodiversity Basics, adapted from World Wildlife Fund’s Windows on the Wild: Biodiversity Basics, is designed to provide ideas for integrating biodiversity into your teaching. The activities are targeted to grades five through eight. The 12 Illinois-specific activities introduce students to biodiversity and take them through levels of increasing complexity. You'll receive many supplemental resources to support the activities, too. Course Name:  Illinois Geology: Earthquakes and Faulting

Course Name:  Community Stewardship through Education on the Benefits and Risks of Eating Fishes

 Teachers of grades five through 12, come learn about a dynamic program from the Illinois-Indiana Sea Grant College Program. Fish School: Taking Stock of Risks and Benefits will update your scientific knowledge and teaching techniques on an important environmental health issue. Eating fish can have nutritional benefits, but eating contaminated fish can cause nervous system disorders and other long-lasting health effects. Fish advisories are helpful but don’t always reach the people who are most at risk. This supplemental program encourages student stewardship through school/community-based awareness projects. You will be able to build community awareness and involvement concerning a significant health-related issue. Activities are correlated to the Illinois Learning Standards. This workshop will be led by staff of the Illinois-Indiana Sea Grant College. Continuing Professional Development Units are available.  Join staff from the Chicago Botanic Garden as they teach us about the interrelationships of organisms in Illinois woodlands and the special problems associated with woodland restorations. Targeted to educators of grades four through 10, this workshop will include discussions of species adaptations, relationships of woodland organisms to each other and the physical environment, biotic and abiotic factors affecting populations and much more. We’ll take a tour to see how these topics relate to the Chicago Botanic Garden. Supplemental educational materials and activities will be provided and demonstrated throughout the day. ABOUT THE WORKSHOPS
ENTICE workshops provide natural resources information, instructional methods and supplemental educational materials. When incorporated into lessons with students, the materials provided encourage and promote stewardship of our state’s natural resources. ENTICE also offers participants the opportunity to network with other educators in a friendly, cooperative, learning environment.
Illinois ENTICE provides the following items for participants.

REGISTRATION INFORMATION
Workshops are open to all educators and are designed for targeted grade levels. Maximum enrollment for each course is 30 participants.
